May: A Few of Our Favorite Things

CA Things We Love - April

“It ain’t no fun if the homies can’t have none.”  – Snoop Dogg

We’re with Snoop. As health coaches, both Emma and Jo often come across new (and existing) products and services that enhance this AIP lifestyle we’re living in some way.

We reckon we should take some time to share the love. So, we’re starting a new series – A Few of Our Favorite Things.

Because if we love ’em, you just may, too…

Oh! – and, if you have a product that you’d like us to check out, why not drop us a line at admin@conscious-autoimmunity.com?

This month, we’re kicking things off with a few goodies we’re currently crushing. We’ll start with a couple of aps we’re loving:

Apps

White Noise App

The White Noise app is all about enhancing your sleep!

The benefits of white noiseare reputed to be:

  • aiding sleep by blocking distractions
  • relaxing you and reducing stress
  • Increasing your focus
  • Potentially soothing headaches and migraines
  • Even masking tinnitus!

And, it works! Well, Jo swears by it!

Not only does the app have white noise, it also has pink noise and brown noise (low frequency sound masking – check out this article on the sleep benefits of pink noise), and many more soothing sounds – boat swaying in the water, anyone?

Plus, it  gives you great flexibility for creating your own soundscape, mixing up to five sounds at once. Jo’s favourite combination is the ocean + a rain storm. She drops off in what feels like seconds!

Among the 40 sounds on offer are an oscillating fan, a cat purring, crickets chirping, water flowing and so many more.

You can even pay a little extra to get a recorder and generator to create your own sounds.

What we especially love:

The sleep clock! If you’re one of those people who wakes up in the middle of the night and has to tap your phone to check the time, this is the app for you. There is a feature in this app that allows you to switch on the ‘sleep clock’ screen. No blue light to further prevent you from dropping off to la-la land.

Insight Timer – Meditation app

One of Time magazine’s top 50 apps of 2016, Insight timer is our current favourite meditation app (although we also like Buddhify and Simply Being & Calm )

This baby is one of the most popular free meditation apps out there, and it’s easy to see why. It features more than 4,000 guided meditations from over 1,000 teachers – on topics like self-compassion, nature, and stress – plus it includes talks and podcasts.

And, if you prefer a quieter meditation, you can always set a timer and meditate to intermittent bells or calming ambient noise.

What we especially love:

Right from the beginning, the app makes you feel like you’re part of a big community – the home screen announces, “4,971 meditating right now / Home to 1,843,244 meditators.”

After you finish a meditation, you learn exactly how many people were meditating ‘with you’ during that time; and, if you set your location, you can even see meditators nearby and what they’re listening to!

Books – hardcover, e-version and audio

The Power of Vulnerability is an audio course that draws from the first three of (the most seriously wonderful) Brené Brown’s books:

“I Thought It Was Just Me (but it isn’t): Making the Journey from “What Will People Think?” to “I Am Enough”,

“Rising Strong”, and

“The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are”.

Guidance and Insights for Wholehearted Living

Dr. Brené Brown has interviewed hundreds of people as part of an ongoing study of vulnerability. “The research shows that we try to ward disappointment with a shield of cynicism, disarm shame by numbing ourselves against joy, and circumvent grief by shutting off our willingness to love,” explains Dr. Brown. When we become aware of these patterns, she teaches, we begin to become conscious of how much we sacrifice in the name of self-defense – and how much richer our lives become when we open ourselves to vulnerability.

“In my research,” Dr. Brown says, “the word I use to describe people who can live from a place of vulnerability is wholehearted.” Being wholehearted is a practice—one that we can choose to cultivate through empathy, gratitude, and awareness of our vulnerability armor.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Cultivating shame resilience—the key to developing a sense of worth and belonging.
  • Vulnerability as the origin point for innovation, adaptability, accountability, and visionary leadership.
  • Our emotional armory – how we use perfectionism, numbing, and other tactics to avoid feeling vulnerable.
  • The myths of vulnerability – common misconceptions about weakness, trust, and self-sufficiency.
  • Discovering your vulnerability armor – recognizing what makes us shut down, and how we can change.
  • The 10 guideposts of wholehearted living – essential skills for becoming fully engaged in life.
  • Six hours of stories, warm humor, and transformative insights for living a life of courage, authenticity, and compassion from Dr. Brené Brown.

What we especially love:

This course is a live recording of Brené Brown giving a series of lectures on vulnerability. If you are unfamiliar with Brené’s work, it is both a wonderful introduction and an opportunity to experience the wonderfully honest style that she brings to her work.  Pick up your copy today

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a book that was recommended to us by one of our AIP Resetters.  It was a title that appealed both of us  and Emma was quick to download it.

This book touches on fascinating and often unsaid truths, that life can suck, and that you can’t stop them sucking and that to process that they suck and that they express that they suck is  OK!  Yes its OK!  Really its OK to admit that life SUCKS!  This book differs from many self help books because it’s refreshing and funny and it helps you reflect but does not require you to adopt mantra’s,  but adopt best practices to focus only on the items that really should care about, and not get so wrapped up in other peoples crap that you end up becoming weighed down by their stuff as well as your own! It teaches that Resilience, Happiness, and Freedom come from identifying what to care about–and most significantly, what not to care about, a difficult concept for many of us Type A Autoimmune Disease types… are we right?

Its a truly refreshing read as a hard copy and more importantly an incredible awesome Audio Book especially while sitting in traffic because it teach you not to give a f*ck about that either! Pick up your copy today – you seriously won’t regret it

AIP Food

As a Community we typically recommend Great Lakes Gelatin or Vital Proteins but this Z!nt Beef Gelatin has been used by Emma for several months.  It dissolves incredibly well for the rushed Mum who can’t wait for gelatin to bloom and creates a really smooth texture and a transparency which means that for the sneaky Mum, a child can’t detect that anything healthy has been added to their favorite dessert (mwah ha ha).

  • Z!nt Gelatin replenishes your body’s declining collagen supply to rejuvenate your skin, hair and joints for natural beauty and youthfulness
  • Restores skin moisture and smoothness, reducing wrinkles and sagging for a youthful, glowing complexion
  • Nourishes your cartilage and tendons, reducing pain and inflammation for carefree activity
  • Premium beef gelatin powder: All-natural, non-GMO, grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle hides, no preservatives, certified kosher, gluten-free, ractopamine-free, rBGH-free
  • Blooms when added to liquid, perfect for making jello, homemade marshmallows, gummies, pancakes, cookies and other treats
